Are you interested in working with horses?

  • We offer Diploma Training in partnership with Abingdon Whitney Colleges . 
  • Funded Full-time courses are available for those aged 16-19 years. 
  • Gain a practical qualification and work experience in a college approved training centre

At the centre, we have excellent training facilities, and can help you build a program around your commitments. The courses are suitable for anyone who wishes to study horse care in the work place. You will study a range of topics that will enable you to work safely and effectively with horses. The topics studied will include assisting with routine stable management and husbandry tasks, safe handling practices, riding, recognition of tack, its use and cleaning etc. 

All assessments are practically based while working on the yard, there are no exams at the end of the programme. Time will be spent building a portfolio to provide evidence of your knowledge.

The programme allows you to work at your own pace within a commercial environment. The course is 1 year long for each level and work has a deadline for completion.

Horse Care Level 1 Work-Based Diploma

Who is the course for? This course is suitable for anyone who wishes to study horse care in the work place rather than attending a full time college course. Tumpy Green Equestrian Centre is an approved training centre for Abingdon Whitney College for those aged 16-19.

What will I study on the course? You will study a range of topics that will enable you to work effectively and safely with horses. The topics studied will include assisting with routine stable management, assisting with routine husbandry tasks, safe handling practices, recognition of tack and its use and cleaning, health & safety and developing effective working relationships. Some students may also be given the opportunity to complete ridden units. The programme is based in an approved training centres so you will be learning in an industry based commercial environment.

What other skills will I acquire? You will work effectively within a team while increasing your skills with in the equine industry. Focus will be put on health and safety aspects and maintaining working relationships with your colleagues and supervisors.

What will I need for the course?  A general interest in working with horses & some practical experience is also required. Entry is also subject to a successful informal interview at Tumpy Green Equestrian Centre. For those undertaking the course, assistance with Maths and English qualifications is available - which can be discussed at interview. 

You will need to be able to demonstrate knowledge of why you want to work with horses and the enthusiasm to achieve within the industry.

What makes this course special? This is a practical horse based course which will allow you to experience work in the equine industry while training. There are no exams at the end of the programme, all assessment is either coursework or practically based.

How long is the course? The course is one year in length.

What can I do on completion of this course? Students who successfully attain the Level 1 programme can progress on to the Level 2 programme. 

 

Horse Care Level 2 Work-Based Diploma

What will I need for the course? You will need to have achieved the NVQ / Diploma Level 1 in Horse Care or BHS Stage 1 certificate. Entry is also subject to a successful interview at Tumpy Green Equestrian Centre.

You will need to be able to demonstrate knowledge of why you want to work with horses and the enthusiasm to achieve within the industry.

How long is the course? The course is one year in length.

What can I do on completion of this course? Students who successfully attained Level 2 can enter the industry or progress on to the Level 3 programme. Alternatively you could progress into the BHS Examination system.
